Oxford,Mississippi the home 20,000 plus college students. The town is formed by two main streets Jackson ave and University ave. The downtown area has a perfect scene of bars, clubs and restaurants. Seems like the perfect place for the Ole Miss student to enjoy their wonder years, but some students see it differently.
“The cost of living is high” says freshmen Kayla Satterwhite.
The college town has been experiencing a change in the cost of living since the recent changes in the economy. A single bedroom can range from any where to the high 600’s to 800. There has been recent construction done to expand living in oxford such as the Hub and Retreat.
“There are no food places, you have to almost drive 30 minutes to get to a good place”
The food places in oxford are slim, there are your typical franchises of Chillies and Apple Bee’s and local venues along the square. Compared to many other towns serving local college kids. Fast food places consume Oxford,Ms.
“Coming from Atlanta , GA this is a culture shock” says Junior Selina askew. Oxford can be a bit of a shock when coming from a large city. Oxford’s life dies at about 1 on a saturday due to the county being a dry county on sundays.
“There are no people after 11 pm out” said askew. In the city you are use to the scene not stopping till about 2 am.
Oxford isn’t all negative , “I do feel safe” says askew. Oxford was named number seven safest schools in the U.S..
“The campus has a lot to offer and so does the city” says Shatterwhite.
