65 and opinionated

Different opinions are what generate the way people view a place. Oxford, Mississippi is made up of people who are different ages and have many views. The older generation of Oxford is part of the community and they have a right to their opinions about the society.
Going around Oxford observing and talking to people is a great way to get insight on how they feel about their community. You see the college students, the young families and the elderly.
Martha Horton has lived in Oxford for about nine years. She first moved here when her husband was transferred for business. Horton voiced her opinion very negatively about Oxford.
“Everything down here is old-fashioned and judgmental, all anyone cares about is Ole Miss,” Horton said.
Horton is not used to southern life, she is from Chicago born and raised. She wants to move back as soon as her husband retires. Horton talked about how there is always chaos all over town with games, parades, parties and festivals. I don’t see why everyone down here thinks this town is so special, it seems pretty ordinary to me,” Horton said.
Horton’s husband likes it here, but would rather live in Chicago because that is what he is used to and where their family lives. You don’t have to say hello to everyone walking down the road if you don’t want to in Chicago, but here I feel obligated to she said.
On the other hand another couple strongly disagreed with Horton and her opinions. Buddy and Bela Chain have lived in the town of Oxford much of their lives. They both attended school at the University Of Mississippi and after marrying decided to live here. They love it they would never leave here.
Buddy Chain is a former baseball player and student at the University. He also was former vice-chancellor and director of personnel.
“Oxford isn’t just a community it’s a family, that has many traditions,” Chain said. Buddy Chain    talked very highly of Oxford. He said even though some nights he wishes he could go to the square for dinner without having to wait for a table, he knows Oxford wouldn’t be as special as it is without the University and the students. Also he said, the town and the University thrive off of each other, one wouldn’t be here without the other.
Bela Chain agrees with her husband, however she has quirks with some of the cities rules. Especially the parking on the square because it makes it very difficult for her to shop and eat when she is afraid of receiving a ticket.
“I have worked on projects involving the cities rules, I want Oxford to seem friendlier with their rules,” Bela said.

"All anyone cares about is Ole Miss"
Many people have different opinions when it comes to living in Oxford, whether it has to do with tradition, the University or even parking tickets. The many views of the people here make Oxford the way it is, and why it’s special to one it may mean nothing to another.
