The webus system at Ole Miss

Before the Webus system, Ole Miss never had a broadcast bulletin system, but just how useful is this system and what are the messages that this system displays?

The Webus system was developed by Telvue, which is a digital media company that develops broadcast products for many different forums.

“The University of Mississippi has a web interface in which they create pages, then send the pages to Telvue and the web sends it back to the university through the internet,”said  the University of Mississippi associate director of communications, Michele Mize.

The webus system helps communicate important and emergency messages such as snow storms and school closings, according to the telvue webus page.

Although the webus system can be used to display emergency information, at Ole Miss the webus system is more commonly used to display department information and internet technology information.

“Some of the information that the University of Mississippi uses the webus system to display is upcoming events for departments such as the office of student affairs, according to Mize.”

Ole Miss does not typically use the webus system to display emergency information according to Mize.

The reason being, because “the webus system displays information in cycles,” said Mize.

So in other words, if there really was an emergency taking place, the webus system would not be the most reliable resource because it would not just focus on the emergency that is taking place. The system would continually display all of the content that was prepared for that particular day.

Senior history major, Sutherland Goodman feels that “it is important for the general public as well as the student body to be informed of emergency information that is taking place, such as tornadoes” said Goodman.

“I didn’t even know that we had a channel designated for university information,” said Goodman.

We should market this channel more to students and give as much information about campus as possible such as emergencies and even class cancelling’s, according to Goodman.
