Ole Miss Psychology Undergraduates, but Not Ole Miss Graduate School

Ole Miss Undergraduates may find it necessary to attend graduate school, but not at the university.  Kristen Hymel, a fifth year graduate at Ole Miss attends Ole Miss's Graduate School for Experimental Psychology with an emphasis in Behavioral/ Neuroscience.

"I think Ole Miss Psychology Undergraduates should attend graduate school but not necessarily at Ole Miss. They will obtain better life experiences that will be beneficial," said Kristen.

According to Kristen and Michael T. Allen, the chairman of the psychology department, to get highly qualified quicker with a good salary, it is better to have a master's or doctorate degree in psychology.  A bachelor's degree will get one a job but maybe not the position one would want.

"I think Ole Miss's Graduate School is okay if they want to go.  However I think one should go to a different school to experience other students and experiences.  If one of our students does apply for our graduate school, they will not receive and special treatments," Allen said.

Unlike most, Hymel obtained her undergraduate degree at from Ole Miss.

" I initially started with Pre-Med and decided it wasn't for me. I took general psychology and fell in love," said Hymel.

She decided to attend Ole Miss's Graduate School because she fell in love with neuroscience after taking Dr. Sufka's brain and behavior course.

Some students have been discouraged from pursing psychology, however Allen believes that psychology is a great field to get into especially if you plan on attending graduate school.

According to Allen there has been an increase of psychology majors from 350 students in 2003 to 650 today.

"The psychology department is a very competitive.  I highly recommend graduate school," said Allen.
