Anyone who is in search of a new
career path might want to consider the education field.
The demand for teachers has steadily
increased over the years. However, recent studies show a greater need for
educators now than ever. According to a Monster.com article, Mississippi is
among the top seven states to suffer from this need.
While the unemployment rate is up
nationally, the education field is hurting for more leaders, especially in our
backyard.
Mississippi houses several colleges
throughout the state. Each school has a major that is connected to the
education field.
“The greatest thing about this need is
the convenience of getting a great education degree in Mississippi,” said
Claire Liddy, an education major at Ole Miss. “We have so many different
schools that offer education majors and other options in the field.”
However, an education degree is not
the only route to a teaching career. Programs, such as the Teach Mississippi
Institute, offer classes to aspiring educators who have degrees in other
fields.
Teach Mississippi Institute
coordinator, Paige Davis, says the need for teachers in Mississippi has been
critical for many years.
“The TMI Program has prepared persons
educated in a specific field to qualify for a renewable 5-year standard
teaching license,” Davis said. “This, in turn, has enabled school districts in
Mississippi to fill needed positions with trained teachers in specialized
fields such as the sciences and mathematics.”
“Participants choose the Teach
Mississippi Institute Program for its quality of instruction from our School of
Education instructors, the convenience of taking classes online, and the
ability to achieve a standard, 5-year teaching license in less than a year,”
Davis said.
Programs such as the Teach
Mississippi Institute were created to help teachers become more specialized in
their particular field.
“I love the ideas behind the Teach
Mississippi Institute Program,” Liddy said. “They provide alternative routes to
help people achieve a career in the education field during this time of need.”
